Pirates (and a follow up on Scrooge)

One of the biggest geek questions you get while growing up basically leads to 2 archetypes in fantasy -
Pirates or Ninja

Truthfully, I can see myself more as cyborg, detective, or wizard, but for the sake of this lead in, let's talk about pirates.

My father was a navy man, with ships and models all over the house while I grew up.  His favorite types of movies were either ship movies or westerns.
I guess my first introduction to the pirate life was from the Princess Bride, with The Dread Pirate Roberts.  Although you never actually see any of that life of a pirate...
Then you have Monkey Island, which I had mostly played through all my childhood (and multiple times).
As cool as that would be, I guess my introduction to the pirate life was the same as most children growing up...

Peter Pan and Captain Hook-

My grandparents use to play the musical video of the 1960 Broadway version many times to me as a child.  It weird that I can't remember it fully now as an adult as it has been over ten years since I had even seen it or thought about it.  But I had noticed the newest version of the series to this tale had peaked my interest into the world of pirates.  And even some pirate themed stuff.
Such as the newest Assassin's Creed 4 - Black Flag (here and here)
And even back to the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Which is where this story really begins...

I can remember everyone saying that Pirates of the Caribbean as a movie was the dumbest thing that anyone could make.  A lot of people were saying that making a movie from a 5 minute ride from Disney was going to be a stupid move.  And I remember people making a stink about Johnny Depp playing a pirate (because they only know him as that weird actor who plays with Tim Burton and not an action star)...  And (as I found out later) people were also complaining while he was acting like Keith Richards, saying that he came off too weird and not funny.
And what did we get?

One of the best movies I had ever seen.
It was the first movie I had ever seen in the theater twice (and almost three times).  I remember having to tell people to GO SEE THIS MOVIE.  It was that good.
The first still has a special place in my heart.
...but only the first one.
Which comes to the second part of this story... what can ruin a good series?

Now, Dead Man's Chest wasn't that bad.  It had it's moments with a good new villain and the start of a new adventure...
But...where it failed I think had to do with "writer correction".
When I say that, I mean when writers try to make a major plot point from changing something from the last movie by quickly referencing it.  The best example I have of this is when it is said "You remember that really awesome treasure we had, but that typhoon happened and fucked things up?  Yeah, that sucked.  So now we have a new adventure!"  Ugh...
One of the classic things people say about movies is that if you can't show it, don't say it.  And that really would have helped this movie.
And then the ending... the stupid f-ing ending...
I swear, most people won't agree to this, but if you fuck with an ending and make it bad, it's not going to end well... Except for Empire Strikes Back... but even then people still complained about the 3rd one.

But At World's End was horrible.  And for more then one reason.

...I forgot where I was going with this...
I keep erasing my mind of that movie.

And the fourth wasn't that bad either.

But I just read about the next one... Yeah, a fifth Pirates movie.  It is happening.
And now I ask you... please stop.   I mean, as curious as I am to see it... I will always just consider the first movie by itself.  The other movies are just fan fiction (and yeah, I know the others were written by 2 of the same writers as the first, but I guess those 4 do make the difference).

And with that... I'll grab a sword and take on ninjas.

*As a follow up, I wanted to talk about the Scrooge McDuck post I put up a few weeks ago.  I remember as a kid watching the shows and even playing the old Nintendo game (and beating it!).
And then I see this -

And I feel very nostalgic again.
Not to mention they got the surviving members of the series to voice the characters (which after 20 years since it was made, if freaking amazing) and I definitely want to give it a try.

That's all I got for now.  Hopefully will get the next part of Shades of Fear next, but I got a situation going on and must give my attention to that first...
Sigh... hopefully will be able to explain later.
